Born as Mukesh Chand Mathur, the celebrated singer became popular among masses as Mukesh. He began his career as an actor, but soon moved on to his true calling – singing – in the late 1940s.
Mukesh was one of the five iconic singers of Bollywood alongside Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey and Hemant Kumar. Not only did he win four Filmfare Awards for his songs, he even bagged a National Award for his song Kai Baar Yu Bhi Dekha Hai (Rajnigandha, 1974).
Raj Kapoor used to personally ask music directors to let Mukesh sing his songs, as he felt that Mukesh’s voice suited him the most. It is said that when Kapoor heard about Mukesh’s death, he burst into tears and said, “I have lost my voice.”
